Demo Tracks How to

From version 2.34, Radardroid pro includes an option to import demo routes. This feature allows you to test the alerts you will receive in your next trip. To create these demo routes we are going to use Google Maps on our desktop and a text editor. Let's see how to do it step by step.

Let us first say that although these demo routes are not completely accurate because they only include some locations along the route and not all the positions that we will receive from the GPS during our trip, we can have a pretty precise idea how our trip will be.

Step 1 - Create a route on Google Maps

Let's navigate to Google Maps on our browser (http://maps.google.com/) and click on the link "Get Directions", enter origin and destination and select the route.

Next, we click on "Save to My Maps" and we create a map with any name.

Now, we click on "My Maps" and select the recently created map and click on "View in Google Earth". This will download a file with kml extension to be viewed with Google Earth but it also contains the info about our route,for example "Directions to Baltimore.kml".

Step 2 - Edit the route

Now we are ging to edit the route with our text editor. The file we have downloaded doesn't contain the route coordinates but a url to the route info. So, we need to download the route coordinates from that url. This is what we find inside the kml file:

<kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.2">
<Document>

<NetworkLink>

<href>http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?vps=1&jsv=331c&hl=en&doflg=ptm&ie=UTF8&oe=UTF8&msa=0&msid=215030144215839241751.0004a0bb5b1a0e41a0ba1&output=kml</href>

</NetworkLink>
</Document>
</kml>

Next, we need to copy the url in our browser to download the real kml file. The url in the file is encoded and we will need to replace every & by &.

You will get a file like this:

<kml xmlns="http://earth.google.com/kml/2.2">
<Document>

<styleUrl>#style1</styleUrl>
<ExtendedData>
<Data name="_SnapToRoads">

</Data>
</ExtendedData>
<LineString>

<coordinates>
-77.036362,38.895161,0.000000
-77.035606,38.895020,0.000000
-77.035133,38.894810,0.000000
-77.034767,38.894451,0.000000
-77.034622,38.893902,0.000000
-77.034668,38.893639,0.000000
-77.034821,38.893360,0.000000
-77.035217,38.893002,0.000000
-77.035858,38.892731,0.000000
-77.036552,38.892632,0.000000
........

We are only interested in the route coordinates. So we delete everything else and we will keep a file with lines like this:

-77.036362,38.895161,0.000000

The last step is to add the speed to our route. We are going to replace the last 0.000000 by a speed like 60. It will look like this:

-77.036362,38.895161,60
-77.035606,38.895020,60
-77.035133,38.894810,60
-77.034767,38.894451,60
-77.034622,38.893902,60
-77.034668,38.893639,60
-77.034821,38.893360,60
-77.035217,38.893002,60
-77.035858,38.892731,60
-77.036552,38.892632,60

........

We are now ready to use this route. Simply save it as route1.csv. Now, we are going to import it as a demo track in Radardroid. Open Radardroid Dashboard and press the Menu button on your phone. Tap on "Demo Settings"

Now we are going to import our route. First we need to copy the file "route1.csv" to our SD card. Tap on "Import from SD" button and select the file "route1.csv".

Once imported, tap on that track line to activate it.
